820,931. Selective printing. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Dec. 15, 1955 [Dec. 20, 1954], No.36002/55. Classes 100(2) and 100(4) Magnetic printing. In printing information on a recording surface that can be read optically or magnetically employing as ink a magnetizable composition comprising finely divided iron the particles of which are coated with a plastic composition containing polyvinyl methyl ether a drum 6 is selectively magnetized by a writing head 7 so that when the drum rotates past the ink supply 8 particles of ink 2, 3, 4 adhere to the magnetized parts as shown in Fig. 4. Excess ink is removed by a vacuum device 9 and the coated drum is then pressed against the record surface fed between the drum 6 and pressure roll 11 so that parts of the ink are transferred to the record card 14 as shown in Fig. 4. The residual ink adhering to the drum is removed by a cleaner 12 and the magnetization removed by an eraser head 13 so that the process may be made continuous. Transfer papers, puniched cards. The marks on the record card can be transferred to a magnetic tape or card 15, Fig. 4; from the card 14 by means of a magnet 16 and. the marking can be read by a conventional pick-up head as shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 9 shows a record card similar to a punched card but instead of having punched holes the visual information of the card can be sensed by code marking underlining the ordinary printed data these markings being shown in enlarged form on Figs. 10.
