Abstract

The invention comprises a method of detecting a potentially dangerous build-up of an aromatic hydroperoxide in the cleavage zone of a system for cleaving aromatic hydroperoxides into phenol and other products by cooling to below its boiling point a bleed stream from the cleavage zone, decomposing the hydroperoxide contained in it and measuring this heat of decomposition which is a measure of the hydroperoxide concentration in the bleed stream. The hydroperoxide mentioned is isopropylbenzene hydroperoxide which may be cleaved into acetone and phenol while minor quantities of acetaldehyde, acetophenone, mesityl oxide and alpha methyl styrene are also obtained. A known fraction of the hydroperoxide is withdrawn from the cleavage vessel and is cooled to about 15-20 DEG F. below its normal boiling point (about 168-170 DEG F.). The stream is passed at a constant flow rate and pressure over two resistance thermometers which measure its temperature T1. It then passes into a mixing receptacle where sulphuric acid is pumped in at a known rate and on leaving the receptacle the temperature T2 of the mixture is measured with a resistance thermometer. The difference in temperature T2-T1 = D T1 is due mainly to the heat of solution of the acid as the mixture does not remain in the mixing receptacle long enough for any appreciable decomposition of the hydroperoxide to occur. The mixture passes to a second receptacle where it remains for about three minutes which is sufficient time for the decomposition to occur. The exit temperature T3 is again measured on a resistance thermometer and the difference T3-T1 = D T2 is the heat of solution of the acid together with the heat of decomposition of the hydroperoxide. The resistance thermometers may be made to activate various electrical circuits so that when D T2 or T3-T2 exceeds a predetermined value the supply of hydroperoxide and/or acid to the cleavage vessel is cut off automatically. The reaction may also be stopped, if desired, when D T1 falls below a predetermined value as this indicates that the acid flow to the mixing vessel has been cut off and that D T2 is not a true reading. The various steps of the invention are shown diagrammatically on a flow sheet.
