Abstract

820,588. Statistical apparatus; recording- apparatus. LANDIS & GYR A.G. May 2, 1957 [May 3, 1956], No. 14026/57. Classes 106 (1) and 106 (4). Apparatus for recording on a strip and registering on counters the differences between associated values VM1, VM2 represented on tapes R1, R2 by distances between spaced holes 51, 52 and 54, 55, wherein the tapes are each moved at constant speed from mark to mark past scanning arrangements by independent drive motors M1, M2, comprises a relay P for simultaneously starting the motors M1, M2 and scanning key contacts for stopping the motors M1, M2 independently through relays A, B so that, according to which motor M1, M2 stops first due to the sign of the difference VM1- VM2, relay D or E is energized, through contact combination b2, a3 or a2, b3, to start motor M3 or M4 driving a record marker to left or right of a central zero position and to start motor groups M5 to M7 or M8 to M10 driving counters for positive or negative values, the duration of these operations depending on the magnitude of the difference since this determines when the other of the motors M1, M2 stops. To restore the marker to zero after recording, e.g. a positive value, the relay D when initiating the recording drive to the left by the motor M3 also prepares the circuit of the motor M4, by contact d3, relay H and contact h1, and relay A, when ending the drive to the left, completes the circuit, by contact a4, relay K and contact k2, and the motor M4 drives the marker to the right until, in the zero position the contact WO closes and relay L opens contacts 12 to stop the motor M4. The advance of the record strip is initiated by the relay L, by its contacts 13 causing a condenser Q to discharge through a relay N energizing it briefly to operate relay O, then held by strip-controlled contacts W1 until the motor M11 has driven the strip a predetermined distance to open contacts W1. Each recording and counting operation is started by manually closing starter switch St for relay P to open contacts p1, p2 for releasing relays A, B and simultaneously starting the tape-drive motors M1, M2. The contacts 02 open the starter circuit during record strip feeding and prevent untoward starting. The perforated tape may have additional holes 53, 56 representing the end of a day, which when scanned by contacts T3, T4 operate relay C to close contacts c1 so that next time the relay N operates to close contacts n2 pointers Z1, Z2 are indexed to indicate the next day or date. After each recording the total registered by the positive or negative counter driven by the motor M5 or M8 is written against the corresponding record before the counter is zeroized. The counters driven by the motors M6, M9 may be zeroized daily and those driven by the motors M7, M10 at longer intervals after writing on the record strip the running totals registered. Separate running totals of the values stored on the two tapes R1, R2 may be provided by driving counters from motors M12, M13 and, if the spacing of each pair of holes 51, 52 and 54, 55 includes a portion representing a constant feed VK in addition to the value VM1, VM2 this can be eliminated by a time relay ZR1 delaying the motor M12, M13 appropriately in each cycle. If it is desired to count differences in values only when the differences fall outside predetermined tolerance limits, time relays ZR2, ZR3 may be introduced and short-circuiting bridges U1, U2 removed from the cirouits to the drive motors M5-M10.
