Abstract
820,201. Magnetic recording and/or reproducing heads. THERMIONIC PRODUCTS Ltd., and CLARK, F. Nov. 25, 1955 [Oct. 11, 1954], No. 29264/54. Class 40 (2). In a multi-channel magnetic recording and/or reproducing head comprising a plurality of individual transducers assembled in side-by-side relation and each including two magnetic cores providing two pairs of opposed polepieces, metal portions providing a current path extending along each side of each polepiece and also transversely thereof, and a non-magnetic gapping shim interposed between and in engagement with each pair of polepieces and with the metal portions at each side of the polepieces, the formation of an electrical shortcircuit path around each polepiece is prevented by electrically insulating components or surfaces in the head. As shown in Fig. 1, the cores 5 which may be iron laminations are received in slots 4 of two non-magnetic electrically-conductive metal, e.g. brass, U-shaped blocks 1, 2, and the short-circuit paths 7 are prevented by making the gapping shim 3 of either electricallyinsulating material or metal electrically insulated on the block engaging surfaces thereof; alternatively the faces of the blocks engaging the shim 3 are rendered electrically non-conductive. As shown in Fig. 2, the several laminations 8 of each transducer are bounded at each side by non-magnetic metal separators 9, the laminations and separators being mounted on electrically conducting tubes 10 or screws, not shown, and the short-circuit paths 13 are prevented by either electrically insulating the tubes 10 from the separators 9 or using gapping shims 12, as described in the Fig. 1 embodiment. In the Provisional Specification the blocks and tubes may be of insulating material.
