Abstract

820,045. Conductors. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Dec. 13, 1957 [Dec. 26, 1956], No. 38799/57. Class 36. A conductor embodying electrical transposition arrangements for use with high frequency currents comprises an elongated conducting inner member having a plurality of conducting members spaced along it and insulated from it and means for maintaining the currents in the inner conducting member and the other conducting members substantially balanced, such means including a magnetic cylinder between adjacent outer conducting members and insulated therefrom and from the inner conducting member. The elongated inner member may be a core 12, e.g. of copper clad steel or of solid dielectric material with a conducting plating, insulated by a layer 13 and surrounded at longitudinally spaced intervals by conducting sleeves 14. Between the sleeves are magnetic rings 15 of high permeability, e.g. of ferrite material, surrounded by insulation 17. Current balancing may be effected by using bridging members 16A and 16B to connect opposite ends of each sleeve to the core on alternate sides of the adjacent magnetic rings so that the high series inductance at each transposition position resulting from the magnetic rings tends to effect transposition of current between inner and outer conducting layers at these positions. Alternatively adjacent sleeves 14 may be connected to each other by lengths of wire looped around the ring 15 in such a manner that the current flow in the part of the loop within the ring is in the opposite direction to that in the core 12. The effect of the difference in mutual inductance presented, by this transformer arrangement, to equal and unequal currents in the inner and outer conducting elements, respectively, is such as to counteract any tendency to unbalance.
