Abstract
819,946. Deodorizing &c., milk &c. CHERRY - BURRELL CORPORATION. Oct. 16, 1957 [Oct. 25, 1956], No. 32321/57. Class 49. Apparatus for the deodorizing of pasteurized milk or removal of peel oil from orange juice has a chamber 20, a chamber 21, a duct 51 communicating at its respective ends with the chambers, a liquid supply duct 37 for milk or juice controlled by a pressure-operated valve 36 and a withdrawal duct 63, a steam inlet 72, gas outlets 76, 88 from chambers 20, 21 respectively, and means for controlling the pressure in the chamber 21 independently of chamber 20. The liquid is preferably sprayed from a cone-shaped nozzle 40 into the chamber 20 which may incorporate a flow deflector 129 and baffle plates 127 (Fig. 12); after its treatment in chamber 20 the liquid flows by way of a throttling orifice (not shown) in pipe 51, enters chamber 21 through a tangential inlet and finally is discharged by a pump 71. Gas and vapour are withdrawn from chamber 20 into an exhaust header 83 through the outlet 76 which is connected to the side inlet of a tee 78 and a throttling disc 81 operable by a handle 86; similar connections are provided between chamber 21 and the exhaust header (Fig. 8, not shown) and include a vacuum relief valve 90 and petcock 92. The outlet port 93 of the header connects with the inlet 94 of a plate-type condenser 22 from which condensed vapour is withdrawn by a pump 112. Vacuum is maintained in the condenser, exhaust header and chambers by a pump 105 connected to the condenser by a pipe 103. In the deoderizing of milk, steam commingles and condenses with the milk whilst in the first chamber thus heating the milk to a temperature of 166-195‹ F. The lower pressure maintained in the second chamber causes evaporation of steam condensed in the milk and of volatile odour and flavour components, accompanied by a temperature decrease in the milk to 134-152‹ F. According to an example, in an apparatus adapted to handle 10,000 lbs. of liquid an hour, the chambers are 16 inches internal diameter and 36 inches in height.
