Abstract

In a process for the disinfestation of vegetable or fruit products by means of toxic gases acting in an enclosed space containing the products to be disinfested, use is made, as a carrier for the toxic gases, of a mixture of gases adapted to enhance the physiological activity of the insects to be destroyed relative to their physiological activity in the free atmosphere and, thereby, to increase their capacity for absorbing the toxic gases, the concentration of which is kept within the limits of non-toxicity for the vegetable and fruit products. The mixture of gases may be rich in oxygen, e.g. 55 per cent and is particularly used for the destruction of perfect insects, or in the case of the destruction of imperfect insects the carrier may be rich in nitrogen, e.g. from 90 to 95 per cent.
