Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:0819520/IV (b)/1> where m is 1-8 and n is 2-8, m+n being at least 4. Preferably m is 1 or 2 and n is 2 or 3. The compounds may be prepared by reacting cyanuric chloride with two molecular equivalents of the appropriate alkoxyalkylamine, e.g. in aqueous dioxan at 0-5 DEG C., followed by neutralization with aqueous alkali and filtration of the product. The preparation of 2-chloro-4,6 - bis - (3 - methoxypropylamino) - s - triazine is described, and a comprehensive list is given of other compounds of the general formula given which may be similarly prepared. The compounds are useful in herbicidal compositions (see Group VI).ALSO:Herbicidal compositions comprise one or more compounds of the formula <FORM:0819520/VI/1> where m is 1-8 and n is 2-8, m+n being at least 4, together with an inert diluent. The compositions preferably contain at least 0.5 per cent by weight of the active ingredient, preferably 1-95 per cent. The diluent may be an inert solid, such as natural clays, diatomaceous earth, walnut shell flour, redwood flour, synthetic fine silica and calcium silicate; the active ingredient may constitute 25-90 per cent by weight of such powder compositions. The solids preferably have a particle size below 50 microns. Suitable liquid diluents include kerosene, Stoddard solvent, xylene, alcohols, alkylated naphthalene, diesel oil, glycols and ketones; the active ingredient may make up 0.5-50 per cent of the liquid compositions. The compositions may also contain surface-active agents, such as sodium oleate, sulphonated petroleum oils, alkyl aryl sulphonates, sodium lauryl sulphate, polyethylene oxides and lignin sulphonates. Examples are given of the compositions of the invention.
