Abstract

819,511. Transistor oscillators. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. March 25, 1958 [March 25, 1957], No. 9786/57. Class 40 (6). An oscillator comprises a transistor having a resonant circuit connected in the output thereof and arranged to operate as a substantially linear amplifier throughout the oscillation cycle and a limiting circuit connected in a positive-feedback path between the output of said transistor and its input. Thus the transistor serves purely as a linear amplifier and the amplitude limitation essential to the proper functioning of the oscillator is performed in a separate part of the circuit. In the circuit illustrated a sinusoidal voltage is developed across secondary winding 10 and is applied to the base electrode of transistor 11, the base of transistor 12 being suitably biased by resistors 16, 17 but being returned to earth for alternating signals by the capacitor 18. By virtue of the common emitter resistor 13 the transistors 11 and 12 are rendered alternately conducting by the signal applied from the winding 10; thus a rectangular waveform appears at the function of resistors 14 and 15. This is applied to the emitter electrode of transistor 2 which operates as a grounded-base class A amplifier having a resonant circuit 7, 9 connected in its collector circuit. The collector electrode is connected to a tapping point on the primary winding 7, this point being so chosen as to present a low impedance to the third harmonic of the oscillation frequency as well as reducing the damping effect of the transistor 2 on the resonant circuit. The capacitor 9 may be variable or may alternatively be made temperature-sensitive to compensate for the effect of temperature upon the value of the inductance 7. Further frequency control may be provided by connecting a piezo-electric crystal in series with the resistor 20 in the feedback path. The oscillator may be modified for synchronization by disconnecting the by-pass capacitor 6, synchronizing pulses then being applied to the base of the transistor 2. A sinusoidal output is taken from the winding 21 and a rectangular-wave output from the collector electrode of transistor 12. Specification 792,418 is referred to.
