Abstract

Foamed materials are prepared by processes comprising mixing finely divided vinyl chloride polymers, organic plasticizers suitable for forming plastisols therewith and foaming agents in the liquid state comprising polyhalogenated saturated hydrocarbons having atmospheric boiling points between 40 DEG and 175 DEG F., heating the mixture to obtain a fluid foam and effect solvation of the resin in the plasticizer, and cooling to form a foamed material of solid cellular structure. Specified resins are polyvinyl chloride and copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate, diethyl maleate or vinylidene chloride. The plasticizer may be tricresyl phosphate, dioctyl phosphate, dioctyl phthalate, di-2 - ethylhexyl phthalate, n - butyl benzyl phthalate or mixtures thereof. Specified foaming agents are 1,2-difluoroethane, trichloromonofluoromethane, methylene chloride, carbon tetrachloride, 1,1-dichloroethane, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, 1,1,1 - trichloro - 2,2,2 - trifluoroethane, and dichloromonofluoromethane. Metal soaps, e.g. aluminium stearate and barium and cadmium soaps, pigments, fillers and volatile thinners may also be added. The plastisol compositions may be placed in moulds and preheated by oven or dielectric heating to form expanded unfused foams, and the temperature then raised to form the fused cellular structure. The products may be used in seat cushions and mattresses. Specifications 737,367 and 819,163 are referred to.
