818,752. Vehicle movers. SHARP. J. R., KAYE, E., and ARNOT, A. E. R. Nov. 4, 1955 [Nov. 5, 1954], No. 32118/54. Class 79(1) In an aircraft handling truck having between front ground wheels 16 means for gripping and lifting an aircraft wheel 43, the means comprise two arms 34, 35 having grippers 41 at their front ends, means for drawing the arms together so that the grippers 41 engage the wheel 43 and means for lifting the arms 34, 35 bodily with the wheel 43. As shown, the truck comprises longitudinal members 13, 14, a wheel 19 driven by an electric motor 20 and steered by a tiller 49, the motor 20 being driven from batteries 121 in a compartment 21. A member 22 interconnecting the members 13, 14 carries ears 23, 24 to which is pivoted at 25 a block 27, the block being pivotable about the axis 25 by hydraulic jacks 30, and a yoke 33 being pivoted to the block 27 about a longitudinal axis. Vertically pivoted to the ends of the yoke 33 are the arms 34, 35 to which are pivoted about vertical axes 40 the grippers 41, pivotal movement of the arms 34, 35 on the yoke 33 being effected by a hydraulic jack 44. Normally the arms 34, 35 are in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the pads 41 being splayed by light springs 42. In operation the truck is moved into a position in which the aircraft wheel 43 is disposed between the wheels 16, the jack 44 is contracted to bring the grippers 41, which are covered with frictional or compressible material 53, into engagement with the wheel 43, equad movements of the arms 34, 35 being provided by intermeshing geared sectors 45. The wheel 43 is then lifted from the ground by operation of the jacks 30, and the truck can be moved to manoeuvre the aircraft into the desired position. Means are provided for ensuring the jack 44 is not expanded before the jacks 30 and for ensuring a limiting pressure between the clamping arms 34, 35. A cover 52 is provided to prevent damage to the jack 44 by the wheel 52. A compartment 48 is provided for hydraulic gear, the jacks being controlled from the tiller 49.
