Abstract

A Ziegler-type catalyst used in the polymerization of alkylenes (see Group IV (a)) is formed, in the absence of the monomer, by mixing the catalyst components in the presence of a suspension of particulate polyalkylene and allowing solid catalyst to form on the polyalkylene particles. The polyalkylene carrier may be the same as the polymer to be formed and may be the suspension obtained from a previous polymerization. Catalyst components specified are compounds of metals of Groups IVa, Va, VIa, VIIa and VIII in conjunction a Group I, II or III metal, alloy, hydride or organo-metallic compound, or a hydride or organo-metallic compound of tin or lead, or an organic boron compound, or various complexes of the above. Preferred catalyst components are those disclosed in Specifications 799,392, 799,823 and 801,031 and in particular titanium tetrachloride with aluminium triisobutyl or aluminium diethyl monochloride. Solvents or diluents used are isooctane, pentane, heptane, cyclohexane, benzene and toluene. After polymerization the catalyst may be destroyed by treatment with methyl or ethyl alcohol, water, an acid or with oxygen or chlorine. Specification 773,536, [Group IV (a)], also is referred to.ALSO:A batchwise process for polymerizing an alkylene such as ethylene, comprises passing the alkylene into a suspension of a Ziegler catalyst at a temperature below 150 DEG C., said catalyst having been formed prior to polymerization by mixing the components in the presence of a suspension of particulate polyalkylene and allowing solid catalyst to form on the polyalkylene particles. The polyalkylene carrier may be the same as the polymer to be formed and may be the suspension obtained from a previous polymerization wherein some of the polymer has been removed and, optionally, further solvent added. Catalyst components specified are compounds of metals of Groups IVa, Va, VIa, VIIa and VIII in conjunction with a Group I, II or III metal, alloy, hydride or organo-metallic compound, or a hydride or organo-metallic compound of tin or lead, or an organic boron compound, or various complexes of the above. Preferred catalyst components are those disclosed in Specifications 799,392, 799,823 and 801,031 and in particular titanium tetrachloride with aluminium triisobutyl or aluminium diethyl monochloride. The solvents or diluents used are iso-octane, pentane, heptane, cyclohexane, benzene and toluene. Subsequent to polymerization the polymer may be purified and/or the catalyst destroyed with methyl or ethyl alcohol, water, an acid or with oxygen or chlorine. By the process of the invention increased yields of polymer are obtained. The Provisional Specification states that polymerization may be continuous. Specification 773,536 also is referred to.
