[Also in Group XXIX] The stone-carrying head of a honing or grinding device is mounted for reciprocation in response to pressure pulsations applied to a crank-operated piston to liquid acting directly or indirectly on a member forming part of or connected to the said head. A honing head 10, carrying four abrasive stones 12, has projecting pins 32 slidably engaging holes in a support member 14, so that the head 10 can reciprocate axially relatively to the member 14 but is constrained to rotate therewith;; the support member 14 is connected to a rotating driving member 16 by means of two upstanding brackets 34, Fig. 3, connected to the forked end 36 of a rod 38 extending from the member 16 by a pin 40 extending through a block 42 supported by the fork 36. A piston 18 projecting from the rear end of the head 10 is axially slidable in a cylinder 20 in the support member 14; a compression spring 30 bears at one end on the plate 22 closing the cylinder 20 and bears at the other end on a nut 28 on a rod 24 projecting from the piston 18, so that the piston 18 is adjustably urged towards the plate 22. A passage 44 in the support member 14 communicates with the cylinder 20 and is connected by a flexible pipe 48 to a passage 52 in the driving member 16 which passage communicates with an annular groove 54 in a stationary member 56 surrounding a portion of the driving member 16. The groove 54 is connected by a flexible pipe 58 to a cylinder 66 Fig. 2, in which a piston 64 is reciprocated by an adjustable crank pin 70 driven through a step cone pulley 76. The stroke and frequency of the recipro cation are thus both adjustable. The system is filled by a manually operable pump 80 bleed valves being provided to enable air to be forced out of the system. The abrasive stones 12 are carried on radially movable supports 100 having projections 102 engaging cam members 104 on a spindle 106 axially movable in the honing head 10. A compression spring 112 is interposed between the front end of the head 10 and a flange 114 on the front end of the spindle 106 ; a piston 108 projecting from the rear end of the spindle 106 is axially slidable in a cylinder 110 in the piston 18 of the head 10. A passage 116 in the support member 14 communicates with the cylinder 110 and is connected to a pipe 120 to a passage 124 in the driving member 16 which passage communicates with an annular groove 126 in the member 56. The groove 126 is connected by a flexible pipe 130 to a two way valve 132 to which is connected a supply pipe 134 and a return pipe 136, both connected to a pump 138, a pressure regulating valve 140 being interposed in the supply pipe 134.
