Abstract

817,419. Lining pipes with plastic material. LEWIS, D. R., and JAFFE, J. A. June 21, 1957 [Jan. 7, 1957], No. 19575/57. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXVIII] An internally lined pipe comprises an outer metal section 20 having flange rings 24 and a synthetic plastic liner pipe having projecting ends 36 which are flared against the flange rings to provide a continuous lining internally and at both ends. The liner may be made of tetrafluoroethylene resin, polyethylene, vinyl and butyral plastics, &c., and is extruded from powder granules 39 urged by a pressure ram 40 through a ring like orifice formed by a tube 41 and die 42 therein. Heat bands 43 may be provided and controlled by thermocouples, &c., and an endless length of liner tube 44 is produced and cut into lengths as required. The flaring operation for the projecting parts 36 is carried out by inserting a heated flaring tool 47 secured by rods 48, 49 to the flange and turning a hand wheel 52, Fig. 5, after which it is removed and the end 53 is then flattened against the flange by a heated tool 54, Figs. 6, 7. The lined pipes may be of straight sections, T-shaped or other forms and for elbows a heated liner is arcuately clamped to bend it to the desired shape, Fig. 16 (not shown).
