Abstract
816,807. Flexible shafts. FERRO STAMPING CO. March 6, 1957 [April 30, 1956], No. 7386/57. Class 80 (2). [Also in Groups X and XIV] A plurality of flexible shafts 22, Fig. 1, par. ticularly for adjusting vehicle seats and windows, are adapted to be selectively operated from a drive unit 24 including a single reversible drive motor 26. The unit 24 comprises shafts 106, 108, 110, to which the flexible shafts 22 can be coupled at both ends and which are adapted to be driven from the motor mounted at 96 through gearing 112, 100, 102, 104 and clutches 114. Each clutch 114 comprises a sliding sleeve 114, see Fig. 13, on its shaft adapted to engage a dog clutch element 118 secured to the respective gear free on the shaft when actuated by a solenoid 120. The remote ends of the flexible shafts 22 have worms meshing with worm-wheels driving pinions in mesh with racks for actuating the seat or window. As applied to a vehicle seat one pair of shafts 22 effect the fore-and-aft adjustment of slide member 12, Fig. 3, in fixed tracks 10 by the pinion 30 carried by a side frame 16 of the slide 12 engaging the rack 32 pivoted to a fixed member 35 at 36. For vertical adjustment of the rear of the seat a pinion 54, Fig. 5, engages a rack 56 pivoted to a lever 48 which is in turn pivoted to the side frame 16 at 50. A link 44 pivoted at 52 to the lever 48 is also pivoted at 46 to a seat support member 20. Thus movement of rack 56 will raise or lower the rear of the seat about a front pivot 40. A similar arrangement is provided for adjusting the front pivot 40 of the seat.
