Abstract
Apparatus for washing and dyeing fibres comprises a bath 6, Figs. 3-6, and a trough 2 having a perforated bottom 3 and which may swing on links 8 from the Fig. 3 position to the Fig. 4 position and back again. The fibres 1 are fed from a shoot 4 into the trough to form a layer on the bottom 3. When the trough swings into <PICT:0816674/IV (c)/1> <PICT:0816674/IV (c)/2> <PICT:0816674/IV (c)/3> <PICT:0816674/IV (c)/4> <PICT:0816674/IV (c)/5> the Fig. 4 position the fibres float on the top of the treatment liquid and are pushed to the left by the right-angled end of the trough. On the return swing the trough moves beneath and relatively to the fibres 1 until they are lifted from the bath and drained, thus the fibres are advanced along the trough in step by step motion. Liquid sprays may be provided above the trough, and a platen may be fixed above the ramp 12 to squeeze the fibres on the upward movement of the tray 2. In the drawing accompanying the Complete Specification the trough 2 has a saw-toothed perforated bottom and is provided with a transverse hump 29 positioned over a division in the bath. The trough is rotated about a point in space by links 20 and cranks 21 rotated by a driving shaft 22, and the fibres are lifted over the hump 29 by a rotatable drum 31 having flexible strips 311. The bath is divided into at least two compartments and the liquid levels therein are maintained constant by inlet pipes 34, 35 and stand pipes 36, 37. In other modifications the trough 2 may be driven so that it describes a rectangle, or it may be reciprocated in a horizontal line and means provided by which the level of the liquid may be raised and lowered. In a further modification the trough 2 is swung back and forth symmetrically about the position where the arms 8 are vertical so that the fibres move forwardly and backwardly. In yet another modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), the bath is divided into compartments for different liquids by means of rubber divisions which are attached to the sides and bottom of the trough 2 and the bath 6, and the trough is divided into separate compartments by wedge-shaped transverse divisions over which the fibres climb during the rearward movement of the trough.
