Abstract

A polymerizable silicon-modified polyester resin is made by reacting (A) from 5 to 65 per cent by weight of an organopolysiloxane having at least 2 hydrolysable hydrocarboxy radicals or 2 chlorine atoms per molecule, at least one of the radicals or chlorine atoms being bonded to each terminal silicon atom of the siloxane and the remaining silicon bonded radicals being hydrocarbon or substituted hydrocarbon radicals, with (B) from 95 to 35 per cent by weight of an unsaturated polyester free from oil modification and obtained by reacting (a) at least one ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or anhydride; (b) at least one saturated acid or anhydride selected from phthalic, isophthalic and terephthalic acids and anhydrides; and (c) at least one saturated linear aliphatic dihydric alcohol having from 2 to 6 C atoms per molecule, the molar ratio of the saturated to unsaturated acidic materials being from 6:1 to 1:6 and the alcohol being used in amount of at least 10 per cent by weight in excess over the stoichiometric amount required to (1) esterify all the carboxyl radicals supplied by the acidic materials, and (2) react with all the hydrolysable radicals of the siloxane. The alkoxysiloxanes specified contain Si-bonded alkyl, aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl, cycloaliphatic or alkenyl radicals which may contain, e.g., halogeno or amino substituents. The polyester reactants specified are (a) maleic, fumaric, itaconic, citraconic, mesaconic and aconitic acids and anhydrides, and (c) ethylene, diethylene, 1:2- and 1:3-propylene and dipropylene glycols, 1:2-, 1:3- and 1:4-butanediols and 1:5- and 1:6-pentane diols. The polyester, which is made in known manner, is reacted with the siloxane at 130 DEG to 200 DEG C., the by-product being removed by sparging, e.g. with CO2 or N2 or by azeotropic distillation. In examples the modified polyesters were made in the above manner by reacting (1) a polyester obtained from ethylene glycol, isophthalic acid and maleic anhydride with methoxy terminated trimethoxytriphenyldimethyltrisiloxane; (2) a polyester obtained from ethylene glycol, terephthalic acid and fumaric with methoxy terminated dimethoxytrimethyltriphenyltrisiloxane; and (3) a polyester obtained from propylene glycol, isophthalic acid, terephthalic acid and maleic anhydride with chlorine terminated dichlorotriethyltriphenyltrisiloxane. Uses.-For bonding mica flakes to backing members, e.g. of glass cloth, asbestos cloth, paper or polyethylene-glycol-terephthalate film.
