An appliance for raising crops from the ground and chopping the same comprises blades pivotally mounted on a rotor about axes eccentric to the axis of the rotor and cooperating with stationary blades mounted to lie between the paths of the rotary blades, the rotor being mounted to rotate about a horizontal axis and being partly surrounded by a deflector casing. The rotor A comprises a tube 1 having on diametrically opposite sides, rods 4 supported on the tube by lugs 1b. Blades 5 are pivotally and detachably mounted on the rods 4 so as to be brought into a radial position by the action of centrifugal forces when the rotor is rotated, the latter rotation being effected either from the power take-off shaft 15 of the tractor, or from a separate engine. The rotary blades 5 cooperate with stationary blades 7 mounted on the deflector casing 6 to chop the crop which has been raised from the ground by the rotating blades 5. The deflector casing 6 is rigidly mounted on the trailer chassis 3 in front of the rotor, and a rear deflector 8c, preferably provided with adjustable deflectors 9, is provided to direct the discharge of the chopped material as required, either into a following tractor, or on to a loading conveyer, or on to the ground to the rear of the appliance. The deflector 8c may either be fixed, or may be pivotally mounted on the cross member 13, means being provided for holding the deflector in the required angular position. The wheels of the trailer may be raised or lowered in the bracket 19, and a jack 20 is provided for supporting the front end of the trailer in the raised position when disconnected from the tractor. The Provisional Specification refers to the possibility of spring-mounting the blades 5 on the rotor.
