Class 100(1) An apparatus for winding web material from one roll on to a second roll spaced from and parallel to the first roll, comprises a wheel fixed to the end of the first roll, a second wheel on the adjacent end of the second roll for rotation independently thereof, means drivingly connecting the two wheels together, a spring arranged between the second roll and the second wheel which is adapted to be stressed when the second roll is rotated in a direction to unwind the web material therefrom and when stressed to rotate the second roll in the opposite direction to wind web thereon from the first roll, and a releasable brake to oppose rotation of the first roll. As shown, sets of supply and lining rolls 10 and 12 are mounted in a frame 14 for movement in an endless path into an unloading position where the supply roll is unwound to supply a tyre building machine, not shown, while the lining roll is rewound to take up the lining material 20 interleaved with the unwound tyre building material 15. The supply and lining rolls are mounted on parallel spaced apart shafts 21 and 22 respectively journalled in blocks 25 carried by a chain 18 which moves the rolls in the endless path. The lining 20 has its ends attached to the rolls 10 and 12. Sprocket wheels 26, 28 are respectively fixed to the shaft 21 and freely rotatable on the shaft 22. A spiral spring 30 is wound about the shaft 22, one end being secured to the shaft 22 and the other to a flange on the sprocket wheel 28. A sprocket chain 35 passes around the wheels 26, 28, such that when the spring 30 is wound up it rewinds the lining from the supply roll,and drives the supply roll in unwinding direction through the chain 35 and sprockets 26, 28. The supply roll may be locked against unwinding by a brake 36 engaging the interior of a flange on the sprocket wheel 26 and actuated by a lever 38 operated manually or automatically to release the brake. The lever 38 can be released automatically by a rod 39 actuated by a solenoid 40, the arrangement being such that the rod 39 actuates the lever when the supply roll is in the correct position for supplying the tyre building machine.
