Abstract

Material is sublimed by mixing with an inert solid in vessel B, introducing gas at the bottom of the vessel to fluidize the solids and to carry the material to be sublimed to condenser C, and continuously or intermittently withdrawing solids from vessel B through valve G. The <PICT:0815603/III/1> solid withdrawn is carried by gas introduced at H to fluidized bed sublimer J and cyclone K, gas containing sublimed material being combined with the gas stream to condenser C, and the solid freed from residual impurities at L and returned to the vessel B. Purified sublimate is removed from condenser C at D and gas is recirculated via pump E and heater F. In examples, salicylic acid and benzoic acid are purified by sublimation, using sand as the inert solid and nitrogen as the gas; the benzoic acid melts before being vaporized.ALSO:Benzoic acid and salicylic acid are purified by subliming the crude acid in the presence of a bed of sand fluidized with nitrogen (see Group III). The sublimate is collected in a condenser and sand is withdrawn from the bottom of the bed, resublimed in another fluidized bed, freed from unsublimable residue and recycled to the top of the bed together with the material to be sublimed. Benzoic acid melts before being vaporized.
