Abstract

Pyridine carboxylic acid nitriles are prepared by passing a fluid stream consisting of or comprising vapours of the corresponding acid amide over a dehydration catalyst at a temperature ranging from 250 DEG to 550 DEG C. The nitriles may be hydrolysed to obtain purified amides substantially free of both colour and pyridine carboxylic acid. The dehydration catalyst is preferably silica gel, alumina gel or mixtures thereof. The vapours of the amide may be admixed with a non-condensible gas such as nitrogen or ammonia. The process is applicable to the purification of pyridine carboxylic acid amides containing minor amounts of the corresponding free acid, e.g. a niacinamide melt containing residual niacin (which may be prepared by passing ammonia through niacin and heating the mass to form a melt). The examples describe the preparation of nicotinonitrile, isonicotinonitrile and purified niacinamide.
