Abstract

813,983. Number-printing apparatus. WARNER-JONES & CO. Ltd., K. Dec. 20, 1955 [Sept. 27, 1954], No. 27844/54. Class 100(2) In numerical printing apparatus having a plurality of rotory number printing wheels actuated by pawls or pitmen the figures on the unit wheel are not arranged consecutively but are spaced apart with other figures in between, the figures being arranged so that for repeat printing of a sequence of numbers, whatever the number is, it is never necessary to impart more than three "cam lifts" to change from one number to the next succeeding number and in particular from the end number of one sequence to the beginning of the next. The invention is described with reference to apparatus having a "tens" wheel and a "unit" wheel with which it is desired to print from the number 24 down to 1 and repeat. The "tens" wheel is engraved 2221111000 and the "unit" wheel 9837621504, deep teeth for operating the "tens" wheel being provided on the ratchet wheel fitted to the "unit" wheel which cause the "tens" wheel to be operated when the figures 1 or 0 of the "unit" wheel are in printing position. Thus, at each change of number to be printed, to arrive at the next succeeding number on, two or three "cam lifts" are necessary and in particular only three "cam lifts" are necessary to change from 1 back to 24. The apparatus for imparting the required number of "cam lifts" may comprise a ratchet disc 11 with pins of three different lengths. The number of pins corresponds to the number it is desired to print and repeat and the length of the pins to wheel one, two or three "cam lifts" are required. The pins A, B, C are connected to an electric source 16 and co-operate with spaced contacts 12, 13, 14 each of which is connected through a solenoid 10 to the other side of the source 16. A short pin makes contact with contact 14 only, a medium pin with contacts 14 and 13 and a long pin with all three contacts, so that according to the length of pin, one, two, or three solenoids 10 are energized. The numbering box 5 is supported, with a box holding drum 4, on a rotating shaft 17. Box cams 1, 2, 3 are provided which are normally spring-urged to a "no change" position but which can be moved to "change" position on actuation of a lever 6 by a cam 7 on the shaft 17. The cams 1, 2, 3 are held on "change" position for a sufficient time to effect a "cam lift" if the solenoids 10 associated therewith are energized in which case levers 9 prevent the return of the levers 6 to the surface of the cam 7 before the box cams have been effective. The number of "cam lifts" imparted therefore depends on the number of solenoids 10 energized which in turn depends on the length of the contact making pin on the ratchet wheel 11. '
