A machine for filling containers with liquid or semi-solid material includes a conveyer, a filler mechanism for filling containers on the conveyer, the filler mechanism comprising a rotatable horizontal shaft extending transversely to the conveyer, an outer cup-shaped valve member located above the conveyer and attached to the shaft, an inner valve member to which material is supplied through a conduit and driving means for the shaft, the inner member extending into the outer member and having a port on its underside and the outer member having a number of circumferentially spaced discharge passages which register in turn with the port and through which material is discharged into the containers as the outer member is rotated by the shaft. A central housing 27 is surrounded by a rotating spur wheel 21 which guides the cartons around a platform 31 and on to a discharge turn-table 26. Cartons are separated from a stack by worm gears at stations 22a and are swept by arms 191 between the projections 68 on wheel 21. Ice cream is poured into the cartons by filler 23a and syrup by filler 23b. A cap is taken from magazine 24 and lightly stamped on at 25a, to be fully sealed at 256. The filler 23a consists of an outer cap-shaped member 82 pierced by orifices 84 and rotated by shaft 76. An inner member 89 seats within member 82 and is provided with a single orifice 91 on the underside. Ice cream is pumped through conduit 98 to the interior of member 89 and, when orifice 91 and an orifice 84 registers, is discharged into a carton. Removable nozzles 103 are used in filler 23a but in filler 23b for syrup are dispensed with to give a sharp flow cut-off. On passing the cap magazine 24, a flange 122 on projection 68 of wheel 21 engages the latest cap of the magazine and the cap is guided by side arms and a downward pressing leaf-spring, Figs. 15 and 16, (not shown), into the carton with the usual removal tab overlying an anvil 123 on projection 68. The capping heads 143, Fig. 6, are each carried on a shaft 131 carried by shaft rotating arms 132. At the first capping station 25a the head is adjusted so as lightly to stamp the cap into the carton thus bending the removal tab and permitting air to escape from the carton. At the second station 25b the cap is stamped firmly into position. A common drive for the wheel 21 and capping and filling heads is described, while the worm gears at station 22a are driven by a separate power take-off from the motor. The housing is adjustable in relation to the platform 31.
