Abstract

Red lead of a particle size of less than 0.1 microns, which may contain free divalent or tetravalent lead oxide, is obtained by oxidizing a divalent lead compound in an aqueous medium at a temperature of 10 DEG C. to 45 DEG C. to form Pb3O4, and precipitating the Pb3O4 at a pH of at least 6.5. The lead may be in the form of the sulphate, chloride, nitrate, acetate, carbonate, oxide, hydroxide or a plumbite, and may either be suspended or dissolved in the aqueous medium; the oxidation may either be performed with an oxidizing agent, such as hypochlorites, hypobromites, chlorine, bromine, lead dioxide, lead tetrachloride, lead tetraacetate, hydrogen peroxide, peroxides such as sodium peroxide, persulphates and perchlorates, hypochlorites being preferred, or electrolytically, for example by electrolysing a suspension of lead hydroxide in a sodium chloride solution which may contain lead chloride. The electrolysis may be carried out in batches or continuously. The lead compound may be contacted with the oxidizing agent at a pH of at least 6.5, preferably pH 9-11. Pigments.-The Pb3O4 as prepared above is suitable for use as a pigment in rust-preventing base coat paints, either alone or mixed with other pigments, such as barium sulphate, gypsum, ferric oxide, ferroso-ferric oxide, ironmica, white lead, sulphur, lead cyanamide, zinc oxide, barium carbonate, calcium carbonate, magnesite, dolomite, fuller's earth, bentonites, montmorillonite, kaolin, graphite, and artificial filling materials. The Pb3O4 content should not be less than 25 per cent. The Pb3O4 may be precipitated together with the other material. In an example, a suspension of lead hydroxide and barium sulphate or ferric oxide is oxidized with sodium hypochlorite to give the desired mixed pigment. The pigment may be mixed with linseed oil to give the desired paint. Specification 698,153 is referred to.
