Abstract
812,209. Burners. CONTINENTAL AVIATION & ENGINEERING CORPORATION. Nov. 20, 1956, No. 35434/56. Classes 75(1) and 75(3) [Also in Group XII] A pilot burner supported in a main combustion pipe, Fig. 1 (not shown) of a ram jet engine comprises a burner pipe 25 having an upstream inlet 15 and a downstream outlet 16, a venturi structure 30 located in the pilot burner pipe, a passage 52 in the venturi through which part of the air in the venturi passes at reduced velocity, means for mixing fuel with the reduced velocity air and discharging the mixture into the venturi whereby to provide a combustible mixture of optimum fuel air ratio regardless of conditions in the main combustion pipe, a flame holder, preferably a perforated cone 26, near the outlet of the pilot burner pipe 25 and ignition means such as a sparking plug 27 located in the pilot burner pipe downstream of the flame holder 26. The passage 52 for air of reduced velocity is formed in a mixing device 50 located centrally of the venturi 30 immediately downstream of the narrowest part thereof. The fuel is sprayed radially inwards from jets 51 into the passage 52 and the mixture is discharged from an outlet jet 53. The fuel supply to the jets 51 is controlled by a metering device 40 which is responsive to the air pressure at the inlet 15 of the pilot burner pipe 25 and to the air pressure at the narrowest part of the venturi, the first pressure being conveyed to the metering device by a pipe 43 connected to an annular groove 42 in the venturi connected to tubes 41 carried by the venturi with their open ends facing upstream, the second pressure being conveyed to the metering device by a pipe 47 connected to another groove 44 connected by holes 45 and a slot 46 to the narrowest part of the venturi. The burner pipe 25 increases in diameter from the venturi to its outlet 16. The sparking plug points are disposed behind a shield 29. Channelled flame spreaders diverge from the outlet 16 of the pilot burner pipe into the main combustion pipe. Fuel is injected into the main combustion pipe of the engine in an upstream direction by nozzles on pipes encircling the pilot burner. The main combustion pipe has a plurality of inwardly extending annular flanges serving to slow down the flow of the burning mixture.
