Abstract

812,115. Centrifugal separators. DANIELSSON, K. E. H., and LUNDMARK, J. F. S. Oct. 17, 1957 [Oct. 19, 1956], No. 32405/57. Class 23 A centrifuge for the sedimentation of liquid suspensions comprises a rotary holder and a flexible tubular container for the suspension, the holder being adapted to support the container in a spiral or helical configuration. The transparent thermoplastic holder 19 has a spiral groove 25 in its upper surface, and radial grooves 36 in its lower surface. A transparent flexible tube 35 having one end knotted or otherwise closed is filled with suspension. The tube is pressed into the groove 25 and held in place by a transparent cover 21, the closed end of the tube being located in an enlargement 27 of the groove. After rotation of the holder the length of the column of heavier deposits may be measured on a scale adjacent the groove. If it is desired to treat any part of the contents of the tube still further, that part of the tube is separated from the rest of the tube, placed in one of the grooves 29, 31, 33, 34, 36, and the holder is rotated. The grooves may have an underout outer wall, and a mouth slightly smaller than that of the tube so that the cover may be dispensed with. A number of holders containing tubes may be superposed and rotated together, and a holder may have a number of parallel grooves. The tube may have lengths of reduced section and the holder may be conical. In the modification shown in Fig. 6 the holder 47 has an internal groove 49 and a clamp 52 to close the outer end of the tube. In the modification shown in Fig. 8 the holder comprises a pan 53 having partitions 55 forming radial compartments housing cylinders 57 each provided with a helical groove 65 and clamps 67, 69. Dimensions of the centrifuge are given in the Specification.
