Abstract

In a process for the alkylation of an aromatic amine by an alkylation agent consisting of an aliphatic alcohol or ether having a lower boiling point than the amine, the amine and said alkylation agent are brought together in the presence of a catalyst at a temperature sufficient to effect alkylation of the amine while said amine is maintained in liquid condition, said catalyst being selected from substances known to be catalysts in the alkylation of amines, said amine and alkylation agent being brought together by feeding said alkylation agent into a body of said amine maintained at the required temperature and simultaneously removing unreacted alkylation agent from said amine until the required degree of alkylation of the amine is obtained. The process may also be carried out by conducting the two reactants through a liquid catalysing the reaction and known to be a catalyst in the alkylation of amines. Catalysts mentioned include hydrochloric acid, phosphorus trichloride and phosphorus oxychloride. Apparatuses for batchwise and continuous countercurrent operation are described. In examples, ethyl and methyl anilines are obtained by passing alcohol through heated aniline at a pressure of 1.5 atmospheres in the presence of phosphorus trichloride (1-3) and (10); dimethyl aniline, optionally with some monomethyl aniline, is obtained in a similar process using methanol as alkylating agent (4); mono- and di-methyl aniline are obtained by passing a mixture of methanol and aniline through heated concentrated phosphoric acid at a pressure of about 1.5 atmospheres (5)-(7) and (9); alkylation is effected with dimethyl ether or a mixture of dimethyl ether and methanol in a process similar to (1), (8). Specification 673,433 is referred to.
