Abstract

811,941. Spring forks for motor-cycles. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO. Ltd. Nov. 2, 1956 [Nov. 12, 1955], No. 32417/55. Class 136(3) In a front wheel suspension for a motor cycle or the like, the front wheel spindle 11 is mounted between and carried by the front ends of a pair of levers 7, 8 which are pivoted on the lower ends of the wheel forks 1, 2 and movements of which are controlled by helical springs 15 connected to the inner ends of both levers. To the lower ends of the forks 1, 2 are brazed plates 3, 4 each forming part of a casing unit 5, 6 respectively. The plate 3 has a bearing boss 12 and a bearing sleeve 13 secured to it. One end of a helical spring 15 is anchored at 16 to the boss 12. A splined shaft 17 is journalled in the bearing sleeve 13. One end of the arm 9 of the lever 7 is keyed to the shaft 17 and secured in position by a nut 19, an oil sealing ring 23 being provided. A cup shaped member 18 is secured to the shaft 17 and has a seating 18<SP>1</SP> for an anchorage 25 for the spring 15. The position of the anchorages 16, 25 may be adjusted for regulation of the preloading of the spring. A grease nipple (not shown) is provided in an axial hole 26 formed in the shaft 17. The grease can pass through an aperture 27 to the bearing surface of the shaft 17 and sleeve 13. A helical groove (not shown) may be provided in the shaft 17 for conveying grease to the whole length of the bearing surface. Ball or roller bearings may be provided for the pivots of the levers.
