Abstract

811,915. Valves. BASTIAN-BLESSING CO. .July 11, 1955, No. 20004/55. Class 135. [Also in Group XIX] Means for controlling the delivery pressure of gas stored in the liquefied state in a pair of bottles and arranged so that the delivery is normally from one bottle but a change over to the other bottle is effected upon depletion of the contents of the first bottle comprises a first stage regulator for each bottle, a second stage regulator common to both bottles, and indicator means to show whether the supply is being drawn from the first or the second of the bottles. The first stage regulators comprise a common diaphragm 40, Figs. 3, 4, engaging the stems 34 of valves 33 which open against the direction of flow of gas from pipes 3 which are connected to the bottles. Loading springs 55 act on the diaphragm 40 adjacent the valve stems and are adjustable by a shaft 47 with eccentric portions 48. The chamber 23 below the diaphragm 40 is connected through the second stage pressure regulator with a discharge passage 24, the second stage regulator consisting of a valve closure member 76 coacting with a seat 71 and movable through a bell-crank lever 80 by a flexible diaphragm 82 loaded by a spring 94 which opposes the delivery pressure acting on the diaphragm. Any excessive pressure in the outlet 24, after closing the valve member 76, causes further movement of the diaphragm 82 to the left away from an abutment 87 to permit escape of gas through a vent 97. When the shaft 47 is in the position shown in Fig. 4 the spring 55 of the left-hand valve is compressed to a greater extent than that of the right-hand valve so that the supply of gas will be taken from the bottle connected to the left-hand valve until the pressure falls to the value determined by the compression of the spring of the righthand valve whereupon the supply is taken from the other bottle. The bottle connected to the left-hand valve may then be exchanged for a fully charged one and the shaft 47 turned through 180 degrees so that the right-hand spring 55 is compressed more than the left-hand spring and the supply will continue to be drawn from the bottle connected to the right-hand valve until it is exhausted whereupon a further changeover will be effected. A handle on the shaft 47 is marked to indicate which of the bottles is connected to the regulator that is set for the higher pressure. When one of the bottles becomes exhausted its associated valve will move to its lowest extent and cause an indicator 62 to appear behind a window to warn the user. In addition, the drop in delivery pressure of the first stage regulator when a changeover is effected from one bottle to another is communicated through a conduit 105 to a remote indicator as described in Specification 811,916, [Group XIX].
