811,769. Photo-electric measurement of width. EXATEST GESELLSCHAFT FUR MESSTECHNIK. Dec. 24, 1956 [Dec. 22, 1955], No. 39225/56. Class 40 (3). The distance between two boundaries is determined by projecting images of the boundaries on to an electronic camera or cameras which scans them to produce impulses of duration proportional to the distance. Lights 2 project images of the boundaries of a strip 1 on to the photo-electric layer 4 of the electronic cameras 5, the coupled coils 6 of which scan a line of the images to produce pulses which are amplified at 8 and 23, limited to a constant amplitude at 24 and joined in opposition at 25 to be evaluated at 26 so as to produce a zero reading at 12 for a constant nominal width. Variations of the width of the strip give proportional positive or negative readings. Alternatively the sum of the two pulses may be obtained to give an absolute reading or only one camera may be used to record both images and produce a single complete pulse. The scanning path may be varied to prevent wear by movement of slotted diaphragms between the cameras and the boundaries.
