Abstract
Acetic acid, e.g. that obtained by the oxidation of acetaldehyde is purified by subjecting it to fractional distillation under reduced pressure (e.g. 200 mm.); the crude acid is introduced into an upper section of a column which is provided with a dephlegmator, and the purified acid is withdrawn in vapour form from approximately the middle of the column; vapours of the low-boiling impurities pass overhead while high-boiling impurities are withdrawn from the base of the column. A temperature corresponding to the boiling point of acetic acid, under the pressure used, is maintained between the feed-inlet and the outlet for the purified acid. Small proportions of the acid are contained in the heads and bottoms.
