Abstract

<PICT:0811366/III/1> <PICT:0811366/III/2> <PICT:0811366/III/3> In the fluidizing process, the solid particles are prevented from falling through the support by horizontal baffles mounted above and/or below the support to form slots which have a width 1 1/2 to 20 times the aperture of a B.S. sieve on which 90 per cent of the particles forming the bed are retained. For example, with particles ranging from 1/16 inch of which 90 per cent is retained on 100 mesh B.S. sieve of aperture size 0.006 inch, a slot width of 0.03 to 0.09 inch may be used. The horizontal strips of the support 1, Fig. 1, and baffles 4 forming slots 8, may be of heat-resisting steel or of low alloy. Alternatively the strips and baffles may be combined in the form of crank-shaped sections, Figs. 5 and 6. A fine control over the flow of gas is obtained by partly or completely blocking some of the slots. Preferably the total cross-sectional area of the slots is less than 1/20 that of the whole support.
