Class 9(1) A machine for filling gelatinous and powdered explosives into cartridge cases, which may be of paper, comprises a framework 1 on which is a plate 2 supporting a hopper 3 and an upper framework consisting of vertical columns 4 and a plate 5. A casing 6 supports the drive for paddles 7, which agitate the explosive, the drive being taken 'from a hydraulic motor (not shown). Part of the hopper base is provided with openings communicating with nozzles 9 and aligned with hollow cutters 10 carried by a plate mounted on a carrier 12, which can be reciprocated by means of a hydraulic cylinder 13. Tamping rods 14 extend from the pistons of cylinders 15 into the cutters. Cartridges 16 placed in a shuttle 17 are brought into the filling position below the nozzles 9 by raising a plate 18 by means of a cylinder 19. After the hopper has been filled with explosive the paddles 7 are set in motion to produce a uniform mass. A shuttle-load of empty cases is placed on the plate 18 and the filling cycle started by raising the plate until the nozzles enter the cases 16. The plate 18 by hydraulic means stops the paddles and actuates cylinder 13 to push the cutters into the explosive. At the end of the cutter stroke the rods 14 push the explosive from the cutters and compress it in the cases 16 until a valve reverses the stroke of the rods and cutters. The operation is repeated until the cases are filled, when the plate 18 is lowered and the shuttle removed. The height of the paddles 7 can be adjusted according to the depth of explosive in the hopper.
