Abstract
810,303. Ladders. ROBARTS, I. C. July 27, 1950 [Aug. 17, 1955], No. 23743/55. Class 20(2) A collapsible stairway for the doorway of a vehicle, particularly an aircraft or for use as a fire-escape comprises treads 11, Fig. 3, that rest at floor level when the stairway is collapsed and handrails 12 that rest at the sides of the door to leave free an opening when the stairway is collapsed as well as when it is extended. The treads are mounted on a lazy-tongs 9, Fig. 2, having extensions 12 with bent over ends 13 forming hand rails. The stairway is hung from a longeron 3 of the aircraft by two struts 1 which are pivoted to the top step 9a and is swung out of the aircraft on these struts so that pins on a link 5 pivoted to the step 9a engage recesses in a bracket 7 with which they can be held engaged by a foot lever 8. The stairway is extended by a jack 20 and toggle links 17 connecting the two top lazy-tong levers. The lower end of the stairway is supported on wheels 14 on legs 15 pivoted to a lazytong pivot and connected by a strut 16 to the end of a stairway tread. The collapse of the stairway may be assisted by springs. The reactions of the jack is taken through links 21, 22 and a stop 22a.
