[Also in Group XXV] A. modification of a locking device of the type described in Specifications 452,626, 569,723, 647,078, [both in Group XXV], 663,480, 663,481, and 673,756, comprising wedge members 5, 6 carried on one member 3 and urged by spring means 17, 18 into wedging engagement in a guideway in the other member 2, a strip 12 being secured on opposite sides of the guideway at spaced points and passing between the wedge members, consists in providing restricting means so that positive locking is obtained in one direction of movement and operating means for releasing the said restricting means as required. The restricting means are formed by the coupling plate 13 secured to the member 3 which houses the wedges 5, 6. Upstanding posts 20, 21 from the wedges 5, 6 respectively engage in slots 22, 23 of the plate 13, the post 20 having a clearance 22 on one side whilst the post 21 has a clearance on both sides when the device is in locking condition. A force on member 3 to the right will cause the plate 13 to act directly on post 20 to increase the locking action. A force to the left will cause plate 13 to move away from post 20 and allow the wedges to move in the guideway against only the wedging action of the springs. The operating means for putting the positive locking out of action comprises a cam member 25 on post 21 of wedge 6 which can be rotated into engagement with an abutment 27 on the plate 13 to move the plate away from its engagement with the post 20 of wedge 5. Thus a force on member 3 to the right will not cause the plate 13to contact post 20 so that the locking will only be derived from the wedging action if the springs in this direction as well. The cam 25 may be adapted to be actuated by a stop 31 on member 2 to release the acid operating means and apply the locking action at a certain relative position of the members 2 and 3. The stop may be movable to an inoperative position if desired.
