Abstract
809,874. Making corrugated tubes; jointing. ACCLES & POLLOCK Ltd. Sept. 26, 1957 [Oct. 10, 1956], No. 30843/56. Addition to 769,728. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In an improvement or modification of the method of manufacturing a flexible metallic tube as disclosed in the parent Specification, wherein there is pressed up in the wall of the tube a helically extending rib, a cylindrical tube 3, without internal support, is rotatably fed through a plurality of swages 4 which when brought together define a substantially cylindrical operating surface on which is formed a helically extending rib 5 which decreases in width, increases in depth and decreases in helix angle in the direction of feed of the tube. The swages may be formed as a plurality of parts 4a detachably connected together, each part having a recess 4b and a rib 5 of constant depth, the parts being assembled so that the rib of the swaging assembly gradually increases in depth and decreases in width and helix angle. Since no mandrel is used a flexible tube can be produced having a plain portion at either end or at an intermediate position. Further, by introducing the end of a second tube into the trailing end of the tube being operated upon the two tubes can be joined together by the complementary groove and rib formed in the tube as the overlapping parts are passed through the swages.
