Abstract
809,609. Lagging underground pipes. STILLITE PRODUCTS Ltd., and DAWSON, J. W. Aug. 20, 1957 [May 22, 1956], No. 15831/56. Class 99(2). A method of lagging an underground pipe comprises mounting a plurality of preformed sections of heat insulating material about the pipe so as to enclose the pipe within an annulus of the material, placing a trough beneath the annulus and in spaced relationship thereto so that the sides of the trough extend upwardly beyond the top of the annulus, and pouring a hot thermoplastic material which is impervious to water into the trough so that the annulus of heat insulating material is completely surrounded by the thermoplastic material. The heat insulating material is preferably a fibrous material such as mineral wool for example that manufactured under the Registered Trade Mark " Stilag ". The thermoplastic material is preferably bitumen. The bitumen serves as a seal to unite the U-shaped lengths of trough to each other. Semi-circular reinforcing support members 9 may be mounted at spaced points about and below the trough 4, T-junctions and branches in the pipe may be dealt with by fabricating (e.g. on the side) appropriately shaped metal, plastic or wooden shuttering to receive the bitumen or other water impervious thermoplastic material. The trough may be of metal or a synthetic thermosetting resin.
