Abstract

Shaped polymeric substrates are coated by irradiating with high energy particle irradiation in a fluid atmosphere containing a compound capable of forming free radicals, and substantially immediately thereafter contacting the surface of the irradiated substrate with an ethylenically unsaturated liquid monomer whereby to form on the substrate a polymeric coating. The coating is chemically bonded to the substrate (see Group IV (a)). Specifications 461,236, 535,421, [both in Group IV], and 665,262 are referred to.ALSO:Shaped polymeric substrates are coated by irradiating with high energy particle irradiation in a fluid atmosphere containing a compound capable of forming free radicals, and substantially immediately thereafter contacting the surface of the irradiated substrate with an ethylenically unsaturated liquid monomer whereby to form on the substrate a polymeric coating. The coating is chemically bonded to the substrate. The substrate may be a polymer or copolymer of methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate, acrylic or methacrylic acid, ethylene, tetrafluoroethylene, vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, styrene, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile or butadiene, a polyester such as polyethylene terephthalate, or a polyamide, polyaminotriazole, polyether, polyurea, polyurethane, phenolalkyd, ureaaldehyde or melamine resin or a silicone. The fluid atmosphere may be water or an organic solvent which is inert toward the substrate and the monomer may be methyl methacrylate, styrene or vinylidene chloride. The compound capable of forming free radicals may be hydrogen or benzoyl peroxide, an N-nitrosoacylanilide, p-bromobenzenediazo hydroxide, triphenylmethylazobenzene, azo - bis - isobutyronitrile or tetraphenylsuccinonitrile. Thicker coatings may be obtained by immersing the coated substrate in the polymerizable liquid from which the polymeric coating was formed and irradiating the coated substrate while it is immersed. Specifications 461,236, 535,421, [both in Group IV], and 665,262 are referred to.
