809,343. Digital electric liquid level indicators. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Sept. 24, 1956 [Sept. 28, 1955], No. 29164/56. Class 40 (1). A device for producing digital electric signals representative of the level of a liquid 4 in feet and inches by means of mechanically connected commutating discs there being one disc per denomination, one 24 for inches and one 32 for feet, is characterized in that the higher denominational disc has two sets of sensing brushes one set being positioned slightly ahead of the theoretical sensing position 52 (i.e. excluding back-lash in gears &c.) and one set being positioned slightly behind the theoretical position, the set that is actually used to produce the output signals being selected by a relay 48 which is controlled by one of the brushes on the lower order disc in such a way that the output signals from the higher order disc change precisely when the lower order disc passes through its zero position, thereby eliminating possible errors. For example, when the discs are in the position corresponding to 12 feet 11 inches (in which position they are shown) relay 48 will be energized and the brushes C5-C8 slightly behind the theoretical position 52 will be operative. If the shaft then rotates in a positive direction, at the instant the inches disc 24 passes from 11 to 0 relay 48 will be de-energized, the brushes C5<SP>1</SP>-C8<SP>1</SP> will be operative, and the signals produced by the feet disc will represent 12, whereas had there been only one set of brushes co-operating at the theoretical position with the feet disc 32, there would be the possibility of the output signals from that disc changing just before or after the inches disc passes through zero, that is in going from an indication of 12 feet 11 inches to 13 feet 1 inch it would be possible to pass through the indications 13 feet 11 inches or 12 feet 0 inch or 13 feet 0 inch. The present invention eliminates this ambiguity. Each disc represents decimal members by a four-element monophyllic code the inches disc going from 0 to 11 or the feet disc from 0 to 15.
