Abstract
809,267. Turning inside out. SEAMLESS COVERS Inc. Oct. 18, 1956 [Oct. 20, 1955], No. 31681/56. Class 112 [Also in Groups VIII and XXIV] In apparatus (see Group XXIV) for applying a seamless knitted pile fabric sleeve to the core of a paint roller, the sleeve S, Fig. 1, which is knitted with an inwardly extending pile 31 is first pulled through a rigid transfer tube and inverted on to the outside thereof by the pneumatic apparatus shown in Figs. 7-9 so that it assumes a radially - distended and longitudinally gathered condition with the pile extending outwardly; the transfer tube carrying the gathered sleeve S, Fig. 10, is then mounted on a fixed hollow mandrel 102 and the end of the sleeve is gripped by a pair of jaws 105 which pull it off the transfer tube on to an adhesivecoated roller core 32 as the latter is fed through the mandrel 102. In order to invert and gather the sleeve S on to the transfer tube 33, Fig. 7, the latter is mounted on a hollow mandrel 35 and the sleeve S is pulled into the mandrel by a pneumatically-actuated hooked rod 58. The end of the sleeve is then manually turned on to the outside of the tube 33 and is gripped by a pair of pneumatically-actuated jaws 34 which are reciprocated for a number of short strokes parallel to the mandrel axis in synchronism with opening and closing movements so that the sleeve S is pulled through and gathered on to the outside of the tube 33. The jaws 34, Figs. 8, 9, are pivoted in a housing 40 which is reciprocated in channels 41 extending parallel to the mandrel 35 by means of a pneumatic cylinder 38. The jaws are opened and closed by the bevelled end 51 of the piston rod of a pneumatic motor 50.. The motor 50 and cylinder 38 are controlled by respective valves 53, 54 each having two solenoids actuated by momentary closing of respective microswitches. The jaw-closing valve 53 is controlled by microswitches 60, 61, actuated by the housing 40 at the end of its stroke; the housing - moving valve 54 is controlled by microswitches 63, 62 actuated by a rod 56 on the piston rod end 51. An adjustable timer is incorporated in the circuit controlling the valve 53 so that once a manual switch has been actuated the jaws automatically undergo a sequence of,. say, six operations in each of which:-(1) the jaws are closed to grip the sleeve S (2) the housing 40 is moved to the dotted line position, Fig. 8, (3) the jaws are opened, (4) the housing 40 is returned to the full line position. If the stroke is eight inches such a sequence would gather a forty-eight inch sleeve on to the tube 33, which may be, say, eighteen inches long.
