Abstract

808,766. Welding by pressure; soldering. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd., LANGRIDGE, A., HUNTER, D. J., and GRIMWOOD, H. W. Sept. 25, 1956 [Oct. 27, 1955], No. 30742/55. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXXVI] A method of making an hermetically sealed container for a semi-conductor device capacitor or resistor comprises sealing together two metal members on each of which is a metal-coated annular band, at least one of the bands being formed on an axially tapered surface. The members are axially aligned and pressed together, at a temperature at which the bands will adhere, to deform at least one member over part of its tinned surface so that the bands are firmly pressed together and caused to slide over each other. When indium is used for the bands, adhesion takes place at room temperature but the Provisional Specification refers to the use of a low-temperature solder and to performing the pressing operation in an oven. The tapered surface may be formed on the interior surface of a cavity in a rigid metal member, in which case the other member is a deformable tube, or both members may be deformable tubes tapered in opposite directions. In the embodiment one of the members is a threaded brass plug 1 the tapered surface 10 of which is coated with indium. A germanium body 5 is soldered in a cavity in the head of the plug and a rod 7 soldered to its upper surface by a layer 6 of indium to form a sub-assembly. A second subassembly is formed by a copper tube 3 of uniform diameter through one end of which a metal tube 7 carrying a brass collar 13 is sealed by a glass bead 8. The lower inner surface of the tube is tinned. The sub assemblies are then pressed together to force the tube over the tapered surface of the plug, as shown. During this process the tube is deformed and the indium surfaces are scraped clear and adhere to each other. A copper cap 15 to which a braided connector 16 is riveted is then forced over the tape or collar to form an intimate electrical connection between its tinned inner surface and the tinned taper of the collar.
