Abstract
A polycarbonate or copolycarbonate of a di-(monohydroxyaryl) sulphone may be made (a) by reacting a di-(monohydroxyaryl) sulphone (or a mixture therefore with another dihydroxy compound) with a dialkyl or diaryl carbonate or a bis-aryl, bis-alkyl or bis-cycloalkyl carbonate of a di-(monohydroxyaryl) alkane, preferably in presence of a basic or acidic catalyst; (b) by passing phosgene into a solution or suspension of the di-(monohydroxyaryl) sulphone (or mixture thereof with another dihydroxy compound) in aqueous alkali or an inert solvent in presence of an acid binding agent (e.g. a tertiary amine); or (c) by reacting a di-(monohydroxyaryl) sulphone (or mixture thereof with another dihydroxy compound) with a bis-chlorocarbonic acid ester of a di-(monohydroxyaryl) sulphone and/or other dihydroxy compound preferably in presence of an inert solvent and an acid-binding agent (e.g. a tertiary amine). Quaternary ammonium bases or their salts may be used as catalysts for reactions (b) and (c). The aryl groups in the di-(monohydroxyaryl) sulphone may be substituted by halogen or alkyl groups. The other dihydroxy compound may be a dihydric alcohol (e.g. a polymethylene, an oxy-or thioalkylene, an aromatic or a cyclophatic glycol), a dihydric phenol (especially a di-(monohydroxyaryl) alkane or cycloalkane), or a phenol-alcohol, many examples of these dihydric compounds being given. The polycarbonates are soluble in dioxane, tetrahydrofurane, cyclohexane, methylene chloride, dimethyl formamide, chloroform and ethylene chloride and may be used as lacquers or for the production of films, filaments or injection mouldings.
