Abstract

New copolycarbonates contain the residues of (1) a dihydroxy compound containing two hydroxy groups both directly attached to an aromatic nucleus other than a di-(monohydroxyaryl)-alkane, cycloalkane or sulphone (hereinafter referred to as an aromatic dihydroxy compound) and (2) a dihydroxy compound containing two hydroxy groups at least one of which is directly attached to an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic carbon atom (hereinafter referred to as an aliphatic dihydroxy compound). They may be made (a) by reacting a mixture of an aliphatic and aromatic dihydroxy compound with a dialkyl or diaryl carbonate; (b) by introducing phosgene into a solution or suspension of a mixture of the dihydroxy compounds in an organic base and if desired in presence of an inert solvent; (c) by introducing phosgene or phosgene solution into an aqueous alkali solution or suspension of a mixture of the dihydroxy compounds, if desired in presence of an organic solvent; (d) by reacting a bis-chloro-carbonic acid ester of an aromatic dihydroxy compound with an aliphatic dihydroxy compound if desired in presence of an acid binding agent or an inert solvent; or (e) by interesterifying an aliphatic dihydroxy compound with an arylene-bis-alkyl or aryl-carbonate. Aromatic dihydroxy compounds specified include dihydroxy-benzenes, diphenyl, naphthalenes and dinaphthyls. Aliphatic dihydroxy compounds specified include polymethylene glycols and hydrocarbon substituted derivatives, oxyalkylene glycols, thioalkylene glycols, xylylene glycols, cyclohexanediols, dihydroxydicyclohexylalkanes, dihydroxydecahydronaphthalene and hydroxybenzyl alcohols. The copolycarbonates are soluble in organic solvents, e.g. methylene chloride, chloroform, ethylene dichloride, benzene, toluene, xylene, acetone, cyclohexanone, butyl acetate, pyridine, dimethyl formamide, tetrahydrofurane and dioxane, may be worked up with plasticizers (e.g. tricresyl phosphate) or fillers (e.g. asbestos or glass fibres) and are suitable for the production of films, fibres, lacquers or moulded bodies. Examples disclose copolycarbonates of (1) 3-cyclohexyl - 4.41 - dihydroxydiphenyl, 4.41 - dihydroxydiphenyl and hexane diol-1:6. (2) 3-Cyclohexyl - 4.41 - dihydroxydiphenyl, hydroquinone and cyclohexanediol-1:4. (3), (4) and (5) Hydroquinone and 2.2 - (4.4 - dihydroxydicyclohexyl)-propane, hexanediol-1:6 or ethylene glycol. (6) Resorcinol, 4.41-dihydroxydiphenyl and hexanediol-1:6. The invention of Specification 800,815 is disclaimed. Specifications 772,627, 808,485, 808,486, 808,488 and 808,489 are referred to.
