Abstract

808,479. Setting projectile fuses; loading ordnance. HARVEY V. P. H., PARRY, F., and MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. Jan. 20, 1945 [Dec. 20, 1943], No. 21372/43. Drawings to Specification. Classes 9(1) and 92 A fuse-setter is mounted on the transversely-swinging loading-tray of an automatic gun (e.g. a 5.25 inch anti-aircraft gun) so as to be capable of (a) longitudinal displacement on the tray to engage the projectile fuse, (b) rotation of the setter proper to set the fuse, (c) displacement away from the fuse, and (d) lateral displacement to enable the tray and projectile to continue their movement to the loading position, in which the projectile is presented 'for loading by an automatically-operated rammer, as described in Specification 578,621, followed by automatic firing of the gun and return of the tray and fuze-setter to the receiving position. The longitudinal displacements are effected by a lever mechanism, including an extensible spring link to allow for rounds of different lengths, actuated by a cam on the gun cradle. The rotation of the setter is effected by a train of pinions, including a lost-motion device, driven either by an arcuate rack on the cradle or by a separate motor. The setter is uncoupled from the tray, after the fuze has been set, by the release of a pawl by a cam on the cradle. Provision is made in the gear train for a continuous adjustment of the setter for the changing conditions of the target. Means are provided in the gun cradle to prevent rounds being fed to the loading tray except when the latter is in the receiving position. As the tray reaches the latter postion, it may energize a solenoid which operates through levers, the firing mechanism of the gun.
