Abstract
808,229. Reciprocating pumps. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. Aug. 20, 1956 [Jan. 30, 1956], No. 25349/56. Class 102(1). [Also in Group XXXIV] In a pump 33 for supplying cooling liquid through passages 32 and 28 and flexible pipe 30 to braking members of a disc brake during a braking operation, water or other cooling liquid under pressure is supplied at all times through pipe 40 to port 39 of pump 33 and through passage 51 in the wall of pump piston 35 and groove 52 in the wall of cylinder 34 outwardly of piston 35 by deflection of the lip of cup gasket 54. The line pressure in pipe 40 is normally low enough that the liquid cannot flow passed the lip gasket 55 to passages 28 and 32. As the vehicle wheel 3 rotates, however, the cam 36 engages the cam follower 38 forcing piston 35 radially outwards. This compresses liquid in cylinder 34 and forces it passed the lip gasket 55 to passages 28 and 32 and also into cylinder 47. As cam follower 38 drops off the rise of the cam 36, spring 57 returns pistons 35 and 48 to a radial inward position and piston 48 on this return stroke forces liquid to passages 28 and 32 so that a double acting pumping action is provided.
