Abstract

808,165. Making wood screws. ROBERTSON MFG. CO. Ltd., P. L. March 25, 1957; No. 9747/57. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XXV] A method of making wood screws comprises cold-working a wire to form a blank having a reduced first shank portion 12 of constant diameter, a second shank portion 11 of greater constant diameter and a tapered transition portion 13, forming a head 14 and then rolling simultaneously and shaping the first shank portion to provide a threaded shank terminating, in a threaded workhardened gimlet point. A metal screw-blank is extruded cold so that the upper shank 11 retains the diameter of the wire stock, the extrusion being accompanied or succeeded by an upsetting of the metal to form a screw-head 14. The reduced shank 12 of the blank is then further cold-worked in providing a thread 17 by a rolling operation, the thread having for the major portion an outer diameter substantially equal to the unreduced shank 11. The rolling of the thread which may be single or multiple is commenced from the transition portion 13 and during rolling the metal of the shank is shaped to form a gimlet point 18 with the thread 17 continuing to the tip 19. In a modification the outer diameter of the thread may be less than that of the upper shank portion.
