807,068. Vehicle steering. TRIGGS, W. W. (Joy Manufacturing Co.). April 13, 1955. [Aug. 13, 1954 (2)], Nos. 23615/54 and 23617/54. Class 79 (5) [Also in Group XXX]. In a belt conveyer (see Group XXX) comprising two self-propelled vehicles 1, 2, Fig. 18, the former supporting driving and take-up mechanism for a conveyer belt 3 and the latter a tail drum for the belt, the vehicle 1 is equipped with four-wheel steering. Its front wheels 64, Fig. 13 are driven by separate motors 67 driving through worm gearing swing stub axles carried by mountings 70 on an axle 71. Rear wheels 65 are mounted on the ends of a tilting axle 75 mounted on pins 78. The steering linkage comprises track rods 73, 77 and arms 87, 88 connected by respective drag links 89, 90 to levers 91, 92 interconnected to a link 93 arranged to give simultaneous equal and opposite movements of front and rear wheels. A segment 100 rotated by a handwheel 99 acts through a link 102 on one end of a lever 103 pivoted between its end to a control valve 107 for a double-acting hydraulic cylinder 94 pivoted to the vehicle frame and having its piston rod 97 pivotally connected to lever 91. The other end of lever 103 is pivoted to a rearward extension 104 of drag link 90. Steering of front and rear wheels is effected in opposite directions by outward and inward movement of the .stem 106 of valve 107 under control of wheel 99, while manual steering is also possible if the fluid supply is cut off.
