Abstract

806,810. Turbine rotors. CHRYSLER CORPORATION. Aug. 17, 1955 [Sept. 15, 1954], No. 23687/55. Class 110 (3). A turbine wheel for a gas turbine engine comprises a central hub 79 which is adapted to be mounted on a turbine shaft 82, and a disc coaxial with the hub and extending radially outwards therefrom, the disc having an inner portion 80 integral with the hub 79 and an outer portion 84 carried by the inner portion to comprise a unitary structure therewith. The axial thickness of the disc decreases radially from adjacent the hub to a region of minimum thickness adjacent the outer periphery of the disc. The disc has at its periphery an enlarged ring portion integral with the outer portion of the disc and a plurality of blades 88 carried by the ring. The junction 85 between the inner and outer portions is disposed radially inwardly of the region of minimum axial thickness. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2, the junction 85<SP>1</SP> between the inner and outer portions 80<SP>11</SP> and 80<SP>1</SP> of the disc is nearer the hub portion 79<SP>1</SP> than in the first embodiment. The hub and inner portion of the disc may be of high strength, ductile metal and formed by forging or casting, while the outer portion of the disc may be of heat-resistant metal and may be formed by sintering. The blades 88 may be formed integrally with the outer portion of the disc. The inner and outer portions of the disc may be secured together by brazing or by welding. Specification 802,667 is referred to.
