Abstract
Factice is prepared by heating with sulphur, and optionally with a catalyst, an unsaturated saponifiable oil of iodine value above 140, which has been pretreated by reacting in a heated state with liquid or vaporized styrene monomer. The oil may be pretreated by passing styrene vapour carried by an inert gas through the heated oil or by adding liquid styrene gradually to the agitated and heated oil. In examples, (1) alkali-refined linseed oil (I.V. 180), heated to 280 DEG C., is treated with styrene vapour and the product is heated to gelation at 160 DEG C. with powdered sulphur; (2) and (3) cold-filtered cod oil (I.V. 165), heated to 280 DEG C., is agitated and styrene monomer is dropped in over a period; the product is heated with sulphur and dicyclohexylamine. Specification 588,353 is referred to.ALSO:Factice is prepared by heating sulphur and optionally a catalyst with unsaturated saponifiable oil of iodine value above 140, which has been pre-treated by reacting in a heated state with liquid or vaporized styrene monomer. The oil may be pretreated by passing styrene vapour carried by inert gas through the heated oil or by adding liquid styrene gradually to the agitated and heated oil. In examples: (1) alkali refined linseed oil I.V. 180, heated to 280 DEG C., was treated with styrene vapour, and the product heated to gelation at 160 DEG C. with powdered sulphur; (II) and (III) cold filtered cod oil I.V. 165 heated to 280 DEG C. was agitated and styrene monomer dripped in over a period. The product was heated with sulphur and dicyclohexylamine. The factices have improved grinding and compounding properties and a compound with natural rubber, activated whiting, zinc oxide, stearic acid, cyclohexyl benzthiazyl sulphonamide, sulphur, and factice gives vulcanizates with increased tensile strength at break. Specification 588,353, [Group III], is referred to.
