Abstract

806,265. Sewing machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd., KESTELL, T. A., and SNAPS, R. Nov. 8, 1956 [Nov. 10, 1955], No. 3110/55. Class 112 Lock stitching by barbed needles; shuttles. In a curved hooked needle lockstitch sewing machine having a bobbin thread case housed within a rotary shuttle arranged to pass loops of needle thread about the bobbin thread case, the shuttle has means to move a yieldable member on the thread case to cause an amount of thread to be drawn off the bobbin. The invention is described with reference to a lockstitch sewing machine similar to that disclosed in Specification 410,463. A cylindrical cup-shaped bobbin thread case 2 surrounds a bobbin 4 the thread 6 from which passes under a tension blade spring 8 through an eye 12 formed in the portion 14 of a yieldable member 16 to the outlet eye 10. The member 16 is formed of springy steel wire which encircles about 180 degrees of the thread case 2 and is attached at 18 in the case 2. The portion 14 is located in a cut away portion 20 of the case 2. Prior to the stitch forming operation, the member 16 occupies the position shown. During the stitch setting operation, the needle thread (not shown) exerts a tension on the bobbin thread 6 and the member 16 yields so that the portion 14 moves to the other end of the slot 20. After the stitch has been set, a cam 26 with a helical edge face 28, Fig. 5 which is pressed lightly into the shuttle casing 22 acts on the portion 14 of the member 16 to return the member 16 to the position shown which causes that member to withdraw from the bobbin 4 an amount of thread sufficient for the next succeeding stitch. To accentuate the bobbin thread pay-off and draw-off movements of the member 16, the cam 26 may be provided on its inner peripheral surface with an enlargement 32 which as the shuttle rotates presses against an enlargement 34 on the spring 8 and applies an additional clamping pressure to the thread. A modification in which the thread tension spring acts on the thread between the portion 14 and eye 10 is also described. This tension spring is attached to the case 2 by a keyhole shaped projection on the spring engaging a similar shaped recess in the casing.
